Subbing earlier than I thought.
The SO’s band is going to be without a keyboardist after August, because she is enrolling in college full-time. I offered to step in after that, so at various times throughout the summer, I have been working on parts.
As of yesterday, that timetable has been moved up a wee bit. The current keyboardist is now unable to make two upcoming gigs, and I’ve been called to step in for those.
Which means I really have to learn, memorize, and play out in less than two weeks.
As a music major, you’d think this wouldn’t be too difficult. Most of it is not. But I’m not really a piano player, even though a certain level of proficiency was required for my emphasis (composition/theory). So I stumble through some things when parts become more intricate (and some are for this band). Add to that Things They Won’t Teach You In Music School (like switching synth patches mid-phrase), and it becomes quite a new set of challenges.
Honestly, I’m more looking forward to getting harmonies under my belt, and this coming from someone who never thinks of herself as a singer. I’m not one of those either, but for some reason I can hear harmonic possibilities easier and I’m not afraid to open my mouth in a supporting role (please don’t ask me to sing POYW). But I think for these upcoming shows, I’m going to focus more on the instrumental parts; we have guest vocals coming from Domi (XuberX), and I’ll probably contribute the tiny backup on “Alles Ist Schoen.”
So, after not having really been on the stage in seven years or so, I’m about to jump in head-first. I’m really hopeful this will work, and I’m looking forward to each show getting a little easier.
AWESOME! I’d love to see you and the Dan play together. Ahem. Musically.
