Good lord what have I done

Pains in the ass, legs, shoulders, lats, waist…

Let it not be said that my personal trainer develops inefficient workouts. Nay, they are so efficient that all parts of the body can easily hurt after just one workout!

I don’t know why I ignore the bottom half of my body when it comes to fitness. Maybe I figure that if I’m walking and getting around without pain, I must be strong. Um, not so much. I did my first day of the new workout yesterday, and today I cannot make it down the stairs without looking like my grandmother (rest her soul), who had bad knees, and would take the steps one at a time, all the while grasping at the railing with one hand and the opposite wall with the other and sticking her tongue out, concentrating hard on not falling or having her knees blow out.

At least I know it’s good muscle soreness, and not joint pain. But holy cow, this is not a good start.

And then you said...

Let me guess—lunges and squats! 2 of my faves : ) That is great you have a trainer… someday, when I can afford it, I’d like to get one. As it is, I already spend enough $$$ on my body!

Alana—I actually am able to afford a good trainer b/c I only meet with her every 8-10 weeks. I know some people use a trainer as someone they use with every workout, but for me, I just need a new routine—after that, I’m fine without their constant presence. So I only pay for the one hour every two months or so.

My trainer is very creative. She and I share the belief that workouts should be challenging (ie, not boring) and efficient. She usually combines 2 exercises into one. So, I don’t just do lunges; I lunge with a 10-lb medicine ball and twist to the side of the leg going forward, which also exercises the hip and all the “balancing” muscles. Another combo exercise is a step/chest press; basically, I use a knee-high step while holding a 12-lb ball, and as both feet get up, I bring the weight above my head; as I step down, I bring the weight down. (She is a cardio nut, too.) I’m not doing squats, exactly, but she is having me do “mountain climbers,” which is something I haven’t done since junior high! There are also “one leg dead lifts” and “hip flexors on balencing balls,” among other things. All sorts of fun…
